Moonbird, the upcoming SBS and NITV series, followed in the footsteps of fellow Digital Original Latte Secomer and Iggy & Ace when they were selected for a short story competition in series enthusiasts.
The series, co-produced by Kutikina Productions, Tasmania’s first Aboriginal screen production company, and Sheoak Films, explores the recent relationship between a plain father (Kyle Morrison) and his son (Lennox Monaghan). Mutonbeading season on remote Tasmania only faces a cultural and personal crisis that threatens their relationships and forces them to stand up to the disturbing history of their families. The cast also includes Nick Farnell as Frank “Skipper.”
It was co-created and co-written by Adam Thompson, directed, co-created and co-written by Nathan Maynard and produced alongside Katherine Petman.
MoonBird (6 x 10 minutes) was one of three new titles produced last year as part of the fifth edition of SBS, National Digenous Television (NITV) and Screen Australia’s Digital Originals Short-Form Drama Initiative . The Pacifica-led series, Moni, Western Australian production and warm props will also premiere in 2025.
Thompson said he looks forward to sharing “a unique Tasmanian story” with an international audience.
“Moonbird is a deep, personal story that explores relationships, resilience and cultural connections in ways that feel intimate and universal,” he said.
“Bringing Moonbird to life was an incredible journey made possible by the incredible cast and crew who poured talent and dedication into this project, and we are proud to share this story with the world. ”
Petman described the choice as “an incredible opportunity to showcase our work at a global stage.”
“We are excited to connect with an international audience and find the right home for a series that transcends Australia.”
