Ryan Coogler is officially heading towards the unknown. The Sinners and Black Panther filmmakers have confirmed that the X-Files reboot he is planning is the next project near him.
“I’m working on X-Files, and it’s the next one right away,” Coogler said in a recent episode of the last podcast on the left. “I’ve been excited about it for a long time and got fired to go back to it… Some of those episodes would be really scary if we were to do our job right.”
The reboot was first reported to be in development in 2023, when Chris Carter, creator of the original series, revealed that Coogler approached him with a new take on the franchise. The project is being developed under the overall contract with Cooler Walt Disney TV through his proximity media banner.
Although details of the plot are still wrapped, Coogler teased the show’s attempt to honor the original legacy while carving out space for new fans. “We try to make something really great,” he said.
When asked if he was connected to Gillian Anderson, Coogler confirmed that they were in touch. He added that he had finished Tron: Ares the last time Anderson spoke, and that he was excited to meet her in the upcoming sci-fi film.
Anderson, who played agent Dana Scully, faced David Duchofney’s Fox Mulder for 11 seasons of the show, discussing Coogler’s reboot in an interview on today’s show in April 2024. “For a great part of my life, I’ve finished X-Files, so every interview I’m doing, people asked, and the answers are always, ‘No, it won’t happen, it won’t happen,'” Anderson said. “Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther (a great, great director) tells Chris Carter (the creator of X-Files) that he wants to take it on.
Calling Coogler “a bit of a genius,” she added: “There’s a chance (rebooting) happens, and whether I’m involved in it is completely other.
Coogler’s take is expected to feature a new cast and a modern approach to the show’s paranormal roots. News of Coogler’s involvement was first shared in March 2023 by series creator Chris Carter. conspiracy. ”
There is no official word yet as to when cast, filming or fans can expect to see Coogler’s vision hit the screen. Based on his track record and his work with major IPs such as Creed and Black Panther, it’s hard not to have high expectations.
