‘Rooster’ Trailer: Steve Carell to Lead HBO’s New Campus Comedy From ‘Ted Lasso’ Co-Creator

The official trailer for Rooster is here, outlining the upcoming HBO Max comedy series led by Steve Carell. It was co-created by Bill Lawrence (creator of Scrubs and co-creator of Shrinking with Ted Lasso) and his longtime collaborator Matt Tarses, whose credits include Scrubs and Bad Monkey. Watch the trailer above, then read on for more details.

Steve Carell plays a writer involved in his daughter’s fall.

Carell plays Greg Russo, a famous novelist who shows up at his daughter Katie’s college and plans to be supportive, helpful, and ideally out of the way. The plan lasts about 5 minutes. Katie (Charlie Clive), a professor at the school, is facing marital problems (her husband left her to become a graduate student) and turmoil at work that is already beyond awkward, including an arson in a staff dormitory and an assault on a professor (by her husband).

Greg tries to do what fathers like Greg always do: jump in and smooth things over. But even he has to admit, “I can’t fix this.” The longer he stays on campus, the more he becomes absorbed in the place, and the students begin to treat him like the larger-than-life character “Rooster” from his book, especially when asked to help. Greg insists he’s not that kind of guy, but one student makes it clear: “This is a university. You can be a Rooster if you want.”

Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses take on another full-on comedy about Carell

Co-showrunners and executive producers Lawrence and Tarses spoke to People in December about what they hope viewers will get from this installment of Carell’s film. “He’s always good and the show is always good, but I think this is the first time he’s also really funny and doing straight comedy,” Tarses said. “I mean, there’s heart in this too, don’t get me wrong, but I’m excited for people to see the funny side of him.”

Lawrence also pointed to the appeal of the writing that was specific to Carell’s comedic instincts, saying, “Look, I’m a comedy writer, so there’s no one, male or female, who hasn’t been greatly influenced by the way Steve does comedy, and I’ve never seen him do a big project that pushes comedy forward in a long time. I’ve never gotten to be part of something where I’m throwing jokes at him and watching him walk away.”

Cast, creative and release details

In addition to Carell and Clive, the series also stars Daniel Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, Lauren Tsai, and Connie Britton.

Rooster is executive produced by Doozer’s Bill Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Lisa Katzer, with Matt Tarses, Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, Anthony King, and Carell serving as executive producers. The studio is Warner Bros. Television, and both Doozer and Tarses have an overall agreement.

The 10-episode season will unfold weekly after the premiere and run through May 11th. Rooster will premiere on HBO Max in the US on March 8th and will be released in Australia on March 9th.
