After the surprise announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 at Nintendo Direct in September 2025, I was intrigued to see how the Switch 2 version of Resident Evil: Requiem would stack up against other versions. There’s a noticeable change in visual fidelity when running the game on less powerful hardware, but I was intrigued to see what else the game would do on the Switch 2’s unique hardware.
At a recent preview, I got a hands-on look at the game and played the Sanitarium demo, which you may have seen all over the internet. But I also had the pleasure of speaking one-on-one with Masato Kumazawa, the game’s producer who previously worked on the Resident Evil 4 remake and Kunitsukami: Way of the Goddess.
When I asked Mr. Kumazawa if there were any challenges specific to the development of Switch 2, he assured me that there were no such issues. Regarding this topic, he said:
“If you look back at the Switch, there was a Resident Evil game on the Switch before, so what we did was we used our past experience developing those games on the Switch to develop the Nintendo Switch 2. We also created many versions of the game for the PC as well. We were also able to make sure that it was also optimized. So it wasn’t that difficult.”
Of course, this led us to ask if there were any Switch-specific features we could check out. To my surprise, there it was. Mr. Kumazawa said:
“We actually went to great lengths to implement mouse control on Nintendo Switch 2. Mouse control would have made the gameplay too confusing and complicated, so we’re actually using gyro instead.”
We can assume that the Switch 2 version will have some kind of amiibo support utilizing the new Grace Ashcroft amiibo, but we don’t yet know how this will work.
Although the game’s release is less than three months away, a Resident Evil showcase is planned for early 2026, providing a more detailed overview of the game.
You’ll have to wait longer.
Resident Evil Requiem will be released on February 27, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.
