Darren and Tristan share their love at the historic finale of Australia’s Great Race: Celebrity Edition.
Please bear with me while I continue wiping the river of tears running down my face. Tonight, The Amazing Race Australia: Celebrity Edition concluded with an emotional and historic final pit stop. Invincible race leader Darren McMullen and his nephew Tristan stopped short of the mat, choosing instead to wait until all three teams arrived and jump together to raise $100,000 for three worthy charities. I chose to share. Oh, I couldn’t stop crying.
Once the race began, 11 teams embarked on the adventure of a lifetime around the world. They were pushed to their limits, faced their greatest fears, and ate questionable animal appendages for our entertainment. Along the way we said goodbye to some dearest favorites, including singer Ali Simpson and her mother Angie, TV personality Darren McMullen and nephew Tristan, and three very special faces, including former Wiggle star Emma Watson and her sister Hayley. A powerful team will take on the challenge.
The final leg of the race in Kuala Lumpur put the skills honed in the race to the test.
The first test was their communication skills. One teammate had to recreate a complex dessert he had never seen before, following his teammates’ instructions. Additionally, there was a rather large, hissing, slippery distraction.
Hailey is in tears and is clearly horrified by the sight of a giant albino python (think Britney Spears’ “I’m a Slave 4 You” vibe) that has been summoned and wrapped around her neck. Ta. Angie was busy telling her daughter Allie to calm down because it was probably just a plastic snake – oh yeah, it wasn’t plastic at all, mom – while poor Tristan was busy telling his daughter Allie to calm down because it was probably just a plastic snake. He was visibly distraught in the face of his phobia.
Their map skills were then put to the test as they wandered through a maze of bookstores, searching for a book in a literary maze. Darren and Tristan deciphered the map from Ali’s vision, and Ali quickly alley-ooped the information to Angie. Darren and Tristan did not make the same mistake again and carefully looked for clues before taking any risks.
Dance break. Darren is living out his hip-hop boy dreams by learning to dance, but his nephew Tristan, his backup dancer, doesn’t seem to share the same dreams.
The challenge was a success on the first try for Emma Wiggle and Hayley, while Angie was like a drunken giraffe on stilts.
Finally, the team had to rely on memory to recall and organize obscure photos from 11 previous destinations. Emma and Hayley arrive first, but Darren and Tristan manage to pass them after Darren spots a sneaky red herring in the photo.
On his way to his final pit stop, to avoid getting lost, Darren uses his Scottish charm to make friends with a local father and his six children, who meet two strangers on the train and a cameraman. I was happy to join.
Darren and Tristan arrived first, but before jumping onto the mat, Darren informed Beau that he had decided to wait for the other two teams so that all three charities could share the prize money. Arm in arm, the three teams hit the mat at the same time, all three teams won, and the floodgates of tears opened.
