UK-based distributor Rapto Film International has acquired international distribution rights to director Gabriel Caruba’s debut film Sunflowers outside of Australia and New Zealand.
Sunflower premiered at the Sydney Film Festival last June and was screened at events in Australia the following month, including in Melbourne.
This semi-autobiographical film follows a teenage boy as he struggles to understand and accept his sexuality as he comes of age in a working-class suburb of Melbourne. Starring Liam Mollica and co-stars Luke J. Morgan, Olivia Fildes, Daniel Halmarik, and Elias Anton.
Writer and director Kalva co-produced the film with Zane Borg for Australia’s Pancake Originals.
“Sunflower” was selected last year for the inaugural “Queer Screen Goes To Cannes” showcase, an initiative to promote and support narrative feature films with LGBTQ+ content.
Rapt CEO Russell Webber described Calva as “an exciting new voice with fresh insight into the universal teenage experience of finding your place in the world.”
Rapt was founded and launched by former SC Films and Bluefinch executive Weber earlier this year.
