The official trailer for Primate, a survival horror story about a menacing “pet” chimpanzee, from director Johannes Roberts (2, 47 Meters Down, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City), has been released. Watch the trailer above and read the gist.

Lucy (Johnny Sequoia, “Dexter: The New Blood”) returns home from college and reunites with her Hawaiian family and their unusually tame chimpanzee, Ben. The poolside party goes awry when Ben becomes infected with rabies and becomes violently territorial. As the trailer shows, at one point we find Lucy and her friends barricaded in a pool holding Ben back, hoping he can’t swim. good…

Dangerous fun may await here. The buzz around Fantastic Fest and Sitges’s early festivals was strong. The film has an impressive 89% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing.

Sequoia co-stars with Jessica Alexander, Oscar winner Troy Kottle (CODA) who plays the father, Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Chen, Charlie Mann, and Tien Simon. Roberts will direct from a script he co-wrote with frequent co-star Ernest Riera. Walter Hamada, John Hodges and Bradley Pilz are the producers.

Primate will be released in Australian cinemas on January 8, 2026 and in US cinemas on January 9, 2026.
