The hunt continues. This time, the predator is not a villain – he is Reed Wal. The full-length trailer for Predator: Badlands has arrived and teases a wild sci-fi action story, just as it is packed with franchise crumbs. Director Dan Trachtenberg will remain in the franchise after the acclaimed prey and recent animation entry Predator: Killer of Killers, piting together an exiled predator and limb-filled Android on the galaxy’s most lethal planet.
Watch the trailer above and read what’s going on in Kalisk and why fans are already buzzing about the alien crossover.
Predators and half androids on the planet of death…
Meet Deku (played by New Zealand actor Dimitrius Schuster Koromatangi). Exiled from the clan, he sets out on his own on a proven hunt, finding an unlikely companion, Chia (El Fanning), the bio-warepond android of the alien Megacorp Wayland Utani. She is rebooted after taking serious damage (read: sliced in half) and is still thrown at the alien beast with her attitude and blade.
Their dynamics are a big draw. “One chatty, one aphasic,” Trachtenberg tells the Empire, calling it “a fun, incongruous pairing.” And there’s a lot of gore and action, but the director claims that “the character’s stuff really pops.”
Trachtenberg points out as a huge influence of the 2005 action-adventure game’s huge influence, and details it in an interview with bloody disgust. The Badlands were a bit inspired by their desire to see predators along with someone else.
Weyland-Yutani Connection
The trailer doesn’t hide that. Cheer’s unreleased eyes reveal the Weyland Yutani logo.
That connection came naturally when we consider how Trachtenberg wanted to live in the story. “I didn’t want humans all the time in this film,” he tells Empire.
Fanning plays two characters in the film. Only one of them has been revealed so far.
What else is hiding in Kalisk?
The trailer suggests more than just predators and nature. There are skull walls, hunting across the planet of “unkillable creatures,” and mech suits towering straight from the aliens. Who is in control?
“We may not be alone in this hunt,” warns Tia, teasing what could be the biggest release of the film. xenomorphs? Rival hunter? Or something else?
It remains to be seen in this chapter whether they have obtained a proper crossover with the alien franchise, but for now it is clear that Trachtenberg is laying the foundation for something bigger. He previously said that there are three ideas after the prey. The Badlands is second.
