How can Australian filmmakers overcome the competitive content landscape and become more discoverable?
“Take advantage of points of interest,” said Madmen Entertainment CEO Paul Wiegard. Whether it’s talent, buzz, or creating an immersive experience, know your audience and plan to engage them where they are.
“It’s always about momentum and just building it,” he says. And then you’re like, “How do we feed that, how do we measure the trajectory of that growth? Because it’s much more efficient or effective to talk to an engaged audience, (…) start with them and develop from there.” ” ask yourself.
The latest episode of the Screen Australia podcast explores the changing landscape of theatrical distribution. Mr Wiggard and Screen Australia distribution manager Anthony Grandy explained how audience behavior has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic, and how this has affected Australian film production in an increasingly global market. We discuss the challenges and opportunities that this poses for people. Wiegard shared Madman’s approach to audience engagement as an independent distributor, and Grundy highlighted some of the research and tools available through Screen Australia to support discoverability, including the new Where to Watch feature. I will explain about it.
“Five to 10 years ago, it was very linear and long tail. (…) Audiences are now very thin. Content is coming from more places than ever before and taking up our time. “We’re demanding it,” Grundy pointed out. “And this tool (Where to Watch) is great for clearly creating links that direct people to where they can find and watch Australian content.”
