Plot and setup
The film, adapted from Adam Mars-Jones’ novel Box Hill, follows Colin (Melling). This is a juggling shift for a ti-sick traffic guard in a parking garage, caring for his mother (Lesley Sharp). Enter Ray (Skarsgård), a mysterious leather DOM that draws Colin into a strange biker scene built on rules, rituals and consent. The trailer features a stylish courtship. It depicts equipment, cheeky wrestling, and Ray’s deadpan commands. “Buy a butt plug.
The world of leather is not the punch line here. It’s a community. Colin learns to meet others on Ray’s trajectory, both in the meaning of “pillion” – in terms of bike passengers and roles in relationships (Jake Sears pops up). Importantly, Ray remains a mystery without a cheap release, and the film doesn’t hone it into a fantasy, but rather leaning against the clumsy and funny side of sex.
What Skarsgård says
“This felt like an opportunity to tell an opportunity to tell stories about subcultures I’ve never seen before. With so much authenticity.”
He is also dull about sex on screen: “Ah, I don’t show sex to men,” so you won’t let it go, but you don’t show a close-up of your penis just because you can do it for shocking value. My mother likes this movie, and it’s about a D/S relationship with a perverted gay biker. ”
He also praised the approach from writer-director Harry Lightton, making his feature debut following the short film.
Previous Runs
After a 7 minutes of applause and the UN’s best screenplay award for UN’s particular respect, Pillion gained momentum with Telluride and Head on the NYFF on October 4th. The early reviews were strong.
