Prime Video has released the official Pickup trailer. This is an action comedy that collaborates with Pete Davidson and Eddie Murphy. Directed by Tim Story (Barbershop, The Blackening), the film throws two SNL alumni into a chaotic robbery story. Please see the above for more details.
Murphy plays Russell, an armored truck driver who is about to go home for his 25th wedding anniversary dinner. Davidson is Travis, a colleague of his unprepared worker who recently had Zoe (Keke Palmer) and had an overnight stand. The same woman is now leading a crew of criminals ambushing their routes.
After all, Zoe’s plans are far beyond truck cash. The gun is drawn, the motivation is personal, and both drivers are forced into her high stakes scheme. Russell’s wife (played by Eva Longoria) quickly becomes leveraged.
The trailer teases a desperate, filterless comedy with a odd, old-fashioned, odd angle. “I’m on a new career,” Russell tells Travis in the trailer. “Are you turning this slow?” Travis asks. “How old do you think I am?” Russell replies. Travis didn’t miss the beat.
Murphy and Davidson, both former Saturday Night Live cast members (although decades apart), bring very different energy to the screen. This has not been lost to the cast and filmmakers.
On the Jennifer Hudson show, Murphy said of Davidson:
Cake Palmer added: “I admire (Davidson) Eddie a lot. It was really cool to see everything together.”
Director Tim Story also praised Murphy’s influence beyond comedy. “What’s cool is… I’ve heard a lot about the constant talk of how much a comedian always has to say. What you don’t hear is how he was influenced. He’s a big reason to make the film I made.”
Alongside Murphy, Davidson, Palmer and Longoria, the film’s cast also features Ismael Cruz Cordova, Marshawn Lynch, Andrew Dice Clay, Jack Kessey and Joe “Roman Rains” Anoai. The script was written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider (the duo who previously wrote the Netflix comedy The Package).
The pickup will premiere worldwide on Prime Video on August 6th.
