Patrick Star Game Review

What to say about a SpongeBob SquarePants game finally not centering around the titular sponge himself? Surprisingly, it’s more than expected, but less than expected.

The easiest way to describe The Patrick Star Game is that it’s Nickelodeon’s attempt to recreate the Goat Simulator series. It’s a pure sandbox map, with no real objectives or plot, just quests and activities undertaken by a familiar cast of characters. It’s a departure from the platform-centric offerings of Battle for Bikini Bottom and The Cosmic Shake, and a refreshing way to open us up to this fascinating world. It just doesn’t do much to really wow, it doesn’t quite convey the humor that the anime series was once known for, and it’s, for lack of a better word, very janky. So is Goat Simulator, but that’s not a good thing here.

Before I keep punching your poor starfish, let me be clear: I had a good enough time playing this game even as a 26-year-old male – but I certainly don’t. I grew up with the show this game is based on. . Still, as a working adult, I probably wouldn’t have spent the £30-35 they’re charging for this experience. It’s not outrageous and will probably be more valuable and last longer to keep the kids entertained. However, it was a higher ask than I expected after playing for a while.

“Games for Kids” has many challenges hidden in the middle of nowhere.

Well, now the blow is over. It’s a game that doesn’t require much thinking. Anything. That’s great. You just run around, talk to a variety of characters featuring an original voice cast, and take part in some bizarre tasks. You can search for treasure in a dumpster, race in a driving school, find gloves in a glove world, or take part in an Overcooked-style mini-game where you make an order of Krabby Patties as free labor for a certain cheap crab. Masu. I’m glad it worked out the way it did. Story-driven platformers can certainly be great, but I feel the best approach is to move away from Patrick-focused games and just do something.

Earn Sand Dollars by performing some kind of self-explanatory task, like clearing civilians from Squidward’s sunbathing spot or skydiving with Sandy. However, this is not a completely real currency. It’s more of a score for how much you do, and the more you earn, the more you automatically unlock different iconic costumes that remind you of classic episodes of the TV show. It’s a nice touch and a way for fans of the series to get even more references in the game, but it can’t be more than a good experience when it relies so heavily on references rather than new humor and personality.

In terms of feeling very unstable, it’s a physics-based sandbox with a dedicated option to reset the world, as we know the world can quickly become chaotic. But apart from having to reset everything due to a failure of my own making, there were also times when I had to restart a quest I had already spent some time on, simply because it was…broken.

I found 24 of the 30 objectives for a particular quest, but after searching for a while, I couldn’t find anything else. It wasn’t the entire map, just one specific location. I spent an hour or so making sure I hadn’t missed anything. Sure, I can understand having the option to restart the quest, but I wish it wasn’t necessary. It’s an otherwise cool and simple game, so when it’s cut short and you have to backtrack, it takes away quite a bit of the fun.

Still, I knew this was a SpongeBob game, so my expectations weren’t too high. If you’re looking for a fun sandbox experience with costumes to unlock, activities to perform, goals to complete, and just exploring the open yet compact Bikini Bottom, you’re sure to have a good time here. Leave the price tag aside. It’s one of the easiest games to play, so you’ll probably keep playing until you get the platinum trophy.

The Patrick Star games are fun, and it’s great to see the original cast return, but this deep-sea sandbox, despite its rich history of references and callbacks, remains in relatively shallow waters. It’s staying. It’s probably a safe bet to keep your kids entertained for a while, but for adults who still love SpongeBob, this is still a solid recommendation. Perfect if the game is on sale and you’re looking for something. It’s easy to work on it without thinking.
