Outlander fans can mark the calendar: Outlander: Blood of My Blood, Starz’s upcoming prequel series is scheduled to officially premiere on Friday, August 8th. The announcement comes along with two newly released posters that have highlighted the central couple of the show.
The episode unfolds weekly on Fridays following the premiere. The series follows the love story parallel to the early lives of Jamie Fraser’s parents, Ellen Mackenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), as well as Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston (Hermione Colfield) and Henry Beaukamp (Jeremy Ilvine).
According to Starz, the story “takes viewers from war-torn World War I to the dense highlands of 18th-century Scotland, and promises two new love stories full of loyalty, passion and desire as young couples ignore the powers they try to tear them apart.”
Over the two eras, My Blood Promises to provide deeper insights into the lives of characters that are only glimpsed in the original series or referenced. Although Jamie’s pedigree was previously featured in Outlander Lore, Claire’s family history remains largely unexplored, creating a new emotional position in this first part room.
Harriet Slater, who plays Ellen Mackenzie, previously told Radio Times that the series feels like “dramas of two eras at once.” A self-proclaimed fan of the genre, she said, “To keep on set every day is like going back in time. You’re in a place and everyone looks like an 18th century Highlander. That’s amazing.”
Despite the challenges of filming in the sturdy Scottish landscape, Slater said the experience was unforgettable. “We’re abused by the elements, but we’re very good at making you feel very immersed in the world,” she shared. “I’m a giant castle nerd, so looking at some of the places we went was a treat.”
The series connects to the flagship show, but Slater pointed out that he is standing confidently. “We have the same team as Outlander and we film in the same building, but apart from that, we don’t cross much of our path at all,” she said.
The ensemble cast includes Tony Curran as Simon Fraser, Sams MacLean Ross, Colon MacKenzie, Sam Letford as Dougal MacKenzie, Sam Letford as Rory Alexander and Murutag Fitzgibbons Fraser, Conor McNeill as Ned Gowan and Jocasta Marine as Sadow Marine.
Matthew B. Roberts will return as showrunner and executive producer along with Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis and Jim Kohlberg. The series is produced by Tall Ship Productions, No Fairing Productions Inc., Story Mining & Supply Company, and Sony Pictures Television.
