The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) has announced the nominees for the 2025 AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel Group, celebrating the past year’s top achievements in Australian film, television, documentary, and online content.

The annual awards serve as a great survey of the year’s Australian screen production – and also a useful list of what to catch up with if you’ve missed it.

The nominations are determined by a mix of Australian screen professionals as well as fans. The announcement today begins Round 2 of voting, where the AACTA membership will determine the winners, who will be announced across two events at the AACTA Awards on the Gold Coast at the Home of the Arts (HOTA) on the 5th and 7th of February 2025.

There will be a free-to-air broadcast on Channel 10 on February 7, with more extended coverage available the next day on BINGE and Foxtel.

Film nominations – Better Man breaks records

Topping the film categories this year are cinematic heavyweights Better Man, How to Make Gravy, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Late Night with the Devil, and Memoir of a Snail.

The Robbie Williams-inspired Better Man (due in cinemas on Boxing Day) picked up a record-breaking 16 nominations across film categories, followed closely by 15 nominations each for George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and BINGE’s feature debut How to Make Gravy. Horror favourite Late Night with the Devil secured 14 nominations while Adam Elliot’s hand-animated gem Memoir of a Snail has 11 nominations. In the category of Best Indie Film, six diverse and interesting low budget features are competing for the award: Before Dawn, Birdeater, Christmess, Just a Farmer, The Emu War and You’ll Never Find Me.

In documentary feature films, music rules, with Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line and A Musical Mind: A Portrait in Process both having three nominations. Gracie Otto’s Otto by Otto also has two nominations.

Television nominations – Boy Swallows Universe, Netflix and ABC dominate

In television, Boy Swallows Universe dominates with 22 nominations, including Best Miniseries and eight acting nominations, making records for the most nominations for any production in AACTA history.

Dylan River’s Thou Shalt Not Steal follows with nine nods, while Colin From Accounts and The Artful Dodger have eight nominations each. Other standouts include Exposure, Fake, Total Control, Fisk, and Territory.

The breakdown per broadcaster shows the ABC leading with 53 nominations, followed by Netflix with 31. Stan has 20 nominations, Foxtel has 18, Binge has 16, Network 10 has 16, while Paramount+ has 11.
