Sony dropped a new trailer to know what you did last summer. We’ll look at the latest chapters in the Thrasher Horror Franchise and see what brings a new generation of casualties and brings back two familiar faces.
The reboot follows five friends and decides to hide the crime and swear to each other in secret after a fatal car accident. But a year later, the secrets are no longer theirs. Masked hook carry killers begin stalking them and decide to revenge the past. As the body numbers rose, the group found their nightmare far from unique, and relied on Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt to rename their roles as Ray and Julie, seeking help from two survivors of the 1997 Southport Massacre. The trailer shows Hewitt delivers an iconic line from the 1997 original, “What are you waiting for?”
The cast features Madeline Klein, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer King, Tyrik Wizards, Sarah Pigeon, Billy Campbell, Gabbriet Bechtel and Austin Nichols.
“As a Hollywood woman, I sometimes feel forgotten in my 40s,” Hewitt said in an interview with people in April. “I was really emotionally moved and I respected Sony coming back to me, the franchise coming back to me, Jen getting me back, the audience wanted me, and that it really felt like an honor.
Hewitt also promised “a lot of twists and turns,” saying, “I don’t think people are expecting anything coming. It’s a really fun ride.” “I think people will be really happy because we approached them like super fans,” said director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who will helmmer a new film following her work on Netflix’s Do Revenge.
This marks the franchise’s fourth film. After the success of the first film in ’97, the studio quickly embarked on a sequel. Standalone follow-ups always know what you did last summer, but in 2006 they were given a straight two video release. Amazon Studios tried out what they knew about last summer’s series in 2021. The series was short-lived and was cancelled three months after its debut.
What they did last summer knows it will start at Australian cinemas on July 17th and US theatres on July 18th.
