The second official trailer has dropped for Bugonia, reuniting Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone for a darkly comedic satire with teeth. Watch the new trailer above and read the essentials.
plot
Stone plays Michelle Fuller, a powerful CEO who is kidnapped by two scheming bigots (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delvis).
It uses a new script by Will Tracy (Menu) to adapt Jang Jon-Hwan’s cult gem Save the Green Planet! is an English remake of Lanthimos. As the trailer suggests, expect an off-kilter, darkly funny tone, and an increasingly detached story as beliefs collide with reality.
Why Lanthimos wanted it
This is one of the rare times he came on board a project that he didn’t shepherd from square one. It was originally developed with Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster as producer, with Chan attached directly.
Lanthimos was hooked on what he read. “I was immediately blown away,” he told the press at the Venice Film Festival, explaining his initial attraction to Tracy’s script. “I found it very interesting and entertaining, but also very impactful and really made you think deeply about things.”
He pushed the theme further. “Unfortunately, so much of the dystopia in this movie is not very fictional. A lot of it is very reflective of the real world…(The movie) reflects our times, and it makes people think about what’s going on today.”
Cast, team, and early buzz
Alongside Stone, Plemont and Delvis, the ensemble also features Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone. The film is produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Lanthimos, Stone, Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Mikie Lee, and Jerry Kyungbum Koi.
The words of the festival are shining so far. At the time of writing, the movie is at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Don’t be surprised to see this in awards conversations.
release date
In the United States, Bugonia opens with a limited run on October 24th and widens on October 31st. The film opens in Australian cinemas on October 30th.
