The bloody halls of Shadyside High are open again, and the PROM season is literally likely to be shorter. Netflix has announced the official trailer for Fear Street. Prom Queen took viewers to the horror time hopping trilogy in 2021, the latest chapter in the horror franchise.
Directed and co-written by Matt Palmer (his second feature after the 2018 thriller caliber), the film takes inspiration from RL Stine’s 1992 novel The Prom Queen. And yes – judging by the trailer, there are novelty, synths and shoulder pads to prove it.
The story follows Lori Granger (India Fowler). Lori Granger unexpectedly thrusts into the fierce world of Shadysoid’s Prom Queen Race. As rival candidates begin to mysteriously disappear, high school students notice something ominous is circling the night of the prom. This year, it’s not just the crown.
“We’re back at Shadyside and the year is 1988,” director and co-writer Matt Palmer told Netflix site Tudum. “In Senior Prom, just two days away, Prom Queen races are already hot, but all hell is unleashed when someone starts massacreing Prom Queen candidates. There are some classic 80s novelty, and persuasive characters, needle drops, dances and more!”
The cast features a mix of familiar rising stars including Susanna’s sons, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Ariana Greenblatt, Chris Klein, Lili Taylor and Katherine Waterson. Netflix also confirmed that the Prom Queen is digging deeper into Sheddyside’s social structure. Palmer focuses on the emotional theme of growing up and generational trauma still ringing true today.
Fear Street: Prom Queen will hit Netflix on May 23rd.
