Netflix has released the official trailer for The Dinosaurs, a new four-part documentary series narrated by Morgan Freeman and executive produced by none other than Steven Spielberg. Watch the trailer above, then read on to find out what it’s all about, which species are in the mix, and how Netflix is recreating the prehistoric world on screen.

Rewinding 235 million years, starting small

The story of dinosaurs stretches back some 235 million years to Marassuchus, a small, swift creature that served here as an early blueprint for what dinosaurs would become. From there, the series tracks the bigger picture, including where dinosaurs came from, how they evolved on a changing planet, why they were important, and what their ultimate fate led to.

Over four episodes, the series features a wide roster of species drawn from recent fossil studies, combining well-known names with some deeper cuts. This includes giants like Plateosaurus and Mamenchisaurus, armored mainstays like Stegosaurus and Ankylosaurus, and apex predators like Allosaurus and Tyrannosaurus. It also heads underwater with marine hunters like pliosaurs and mosasaurs, while Spinosaurus (featured in key art) is depicted as a creature that moves between land and sea. Early feathered flying creatures such as Anchiornis and Longipteryx also appeared, referring to dinosaurs that still exist today: birds.

Spielberg, Amblin, and the familiar VFX team

This documentary series is produced by Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment in collaboration with the creators of Our Planet. Production-wise, following their previous collaboration on Life on Our Planet, Spielberg and Amblin reunite with Silverback Films and Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to take a more cinematic approach to the dinosaur era using visual effects.

release date

All four episodes of The Dinosaurs will premiere on Netflix on March 6th.
