The lead cast is gathering for a Netflix True-Crime thriller, centering on one of the most infamous domestic terrorists in US history. Title Unabom, the film stars Jacob Tremblay (The Room, Wonder) as young Ted Kaczynski and Russell Crowe as Henry Murray, Henry Murray, whose experimental role played in shaping Kaczynski’s ominous trajectory. Shailene Woodley and Annabelle Wallis conclude the main cast.
Directed by Janus Metz (Borg vs. McEnroe, all old knives), Unabom explores the origins and manhunts of men who terrorized the United States for nearly 20 years. “Unabom is a story about young people who feel more and more deprived of their rights by society and decide to take away violence as a means of revenge,” he told Netflix’s website Tudum. “We, roughly speaking, intersect between two timelines.
The film is based on the script by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves and is produced by Sophie Cassidy in collaboration with MRC with 2.0 Entertainment. Don Lee, Chalsen and Greaves act as executive producers. As reported in Deadline, the project has been in development since it started in 2.0, and is in the midst of Netflix’s continuous push to the Prestige thriller.
Kaczynski’s transformation is portrayed throughout his problematic past, including the controversial psychological experiments he underwent at Harvard under the supervision of Murray (Crowe). Decades later, FBI agent Joanne Miller (Woodley) leads a relentless investigation to bring elusive bombers to trial. Wallis portrays Christiana Morgan, Murray’s academic partner and co-director of Harvard Psychology Clinic.
“I was fascinated by the fact that Unabomber hunting was the longest and most expensive business in the FBI,” Metz said. “But what really caught me was the story of Ted Kaczynsky’s year at Harvard, when he was a young mathematics student. This was an ally of a story I didn’t know about. It helps to reveal a very dark chapter in American history.”
The manager also praised his young lead. “Jacob Tremblay is a very talented young actor. He was the best sensibility for my vision of Ted when he was a young student at Harvard University. He has the vulnerability and intelligence to Jacob’s appearance and performance that this story requires.
Production of UNABOM is currently underway. Netflix has not announced a release date yet, but it is expected to premiere in 2026.
