The Australian and Ireland co-produced mixtape chords at the SXSW Film and Television Festival in Texas and won the Audience Award for the TV Spotlight Thread.
The adaptation of Jane Sanderson’s romantic novel, which premiered at the event, stars Theresa Palmer and Jim Sturgess as a couple reconnecting from the other side of the world through shared songs from the past.
Joining Palmer and Sturges in the cast are Irish talents such as Ben Lawson, Julia Savage, Jacqueline Mackenzie, Chica Ikogwe, Mark O’Halloran, Helen Behan, Connor Sanchez, Jonathan Harden and Siobang O’Kelly. There are also British actor Alexis Rodney and Finnish actress Sarah Soully.
The Binge series adapted to the screen by Joe Spain and directed by Australian director Lucy Guffy, was produced by Aquarius Films’ Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford and Subotica’s Aoife O’Sullivan and Tristan Orpen Lynch. There are no premier dates for Binge yet.
By congratulating the winners of this year’s Audience Awards, SXSW Vice President of Film & TV Claudette Godfrey paid tribute to “filmmakers, audiences and volunteers who excelled at this year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival.”
“We built another great program that independently creates stories, documentaries, television series and XR experiences at the same stage as studio films and television shows,” she said.
“The magic of shared viewing experiences and sense of community has continued to define our festival. We are excited that every project this year will reach even more audiences beyond SXSW!”
Mixtape was one of the Australian title screenings at an Australian event where surfers, spreadsheet champions, we fill the dead, fill the baggage, another shot, deeper, the most racist person I know, and makes it look real.
The announcement of the Audience Awards follows the festival’s ju umpire and special awards last week, with Chinese and Australian filmmaker Amy Wang receiving the Big Ju umpire Award for Sci-fi dramas diagonally in a storytelling special competition, and Leela Barghese received the Special Ju umpire Award for short competition for the storytelling for those I know best.
