Perhaps Michael Fassbender has a multiverse path as the star of Mad Max: Fury Road.
The actor recently sat down on Happy Sad’s confused podcast with Josh Horowitz. There, he opened up about George Miller’s tragic audition for critics of his 2015 action epic. Tom Hardy eventually won the role of Max Rockatansky, but Fassbender revealed that he was given the opportunity to try out the lead role.
“Oh my god, that was one of the worst auditions,” recalls Fassbender. “It was probably back 12 years ago, yeah, but thankfully, I didn’t have to audition for a while.”
Performance wasn’t the only one that got off to a rough start. Fassbender admitted that he was hopelessly lost midway through the audition despite printing instructions with him in the car. “I got lost and ended up reaching the audition an hour late. And I wasn’t in the right headspace.”
When he finally arrived at Warner Bros. things didn’t get much better. “I was like, ‘Sorry’ and they were like, ‘Fine’,” Fassbender said.
What followed was an experience that Fassbender clearly hadn’t forgotten. Miller had an acting coach in the room. It’s an “extremely unbearable” element of the audition.
“I’m classically trained, so you know, I have my own process. Obviously there is the purpose the character has and the activities I play to get it. So I felt like you were teaching your grandma how to suck eggs here.”
The coach instructed him to make the simple line physical, as Fassbender had funny reminisced with Australian accents. He was like leaving the room (woke up and using both hands movements). Leave the room. ”
Fassbender did as he was told – or he thought. “So I’m like, ‘Watch out of the room! Get out of the room!” They’re like, ‘No, you don’t need to do your hand stuff.’ I do the hands. He said, “What are you doing?” I said, “No, I was doing it, it’s physical…” It was… it was… I couldn’t wait to get out of there. ”
And that was the end of the road of Fury Road prospects in Fassbender. “Obviously, I didn’t get that role,” he said. “Tom Hardy has taken that role.
Fassbender’s career certainly didn’t suffer. Many of his credits include the X-Men franchise (where he played Marvel character Eric Laneshire/Magneto), Steve Jobs, 12 Years of Slave, and the newly released Spice Thriller Black Bag by Director Steven Soderbergh. Still, you need to wonder what Fassbender’s Max looked like. If he just showed him a way to properly evacuate the room.
