Box Office Mojo posted its weekly MPAA ratings update yesterday. I don’t have much to report. However, there are two items of note.
Some of the big news is about Marley and Me. Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson’s romantic drama, which revolves around a troubled marriage and a dog, is rated PG (theme, some suggestive content and language). What’s rarer than a live-action non-children’s movie getting a G is a live-action non-children’s movie getting a PG. Seriously, I can’t even remember the last adult drama/comedy that received a PG rating. The last time I contacted him was in July 1997 (which shocked me too). PG still produces family-friendly adventure films (Journey To The Center Of The Earth, Bedtime Stories), child-centered dramas and musicals (Akeelah And The Bee, Hairspray), and cartoons (Bolt ), but has also been used in live-action movies. There are almost no works for adults at the moment. Heck, even Mamma Mia! Somehow it got a PG-13, but it probably deserves a G for the content (was the harsh rating just for the insinuation that Streep slept around when she was younger?). No matter what, it’s a good thing Fox didn’t throw in an unnecessary “F-word” just to get a “harder” PG-13.
Do you have any other newsworthy snippets? Australia opens in less than a week, but only now did it get a PG-13 rating from the MPAA? The 165-minute movie was rushed to completion. I understand that it was, but this may be a record for a movie whose prior reviews weren’t particularly appealing.
Other small details include the R rating for Underworld 3 (a prequel in which Rhona Mitra replaces Kate Beckinsale), and the PG-13 rating for The Soloist (moved again and now into the summer season) (scheduled for April 24th). , and Old Dogs’ PG (a family comedy starring John Travolta and Robin Williams that ran for almost a full year, from March 2009 to Thanksgiving 2009). This is the only one suitable for printing. Sorry for the rhyming post title, but I couldn’t help it.
