Liam Neeson’s run as a beloved action movie star may come to an end next year. The Oscar nominee gave an interview to People magazine and teased his retirement from the genre that rekindled the second half of his acting career. Neeson’s role in the 2008 film Taken turned him into an action icon, and he hasn’t stopped on screen in the 16 years since. Even into his 70s, Neeson continues to perform his own fight scenes with the help of longtime stunt collaborator Mark Vanserow.
“I’m 72 years old and this has to stop at some point,” Neeson told the magazine. “I can’t fool the audience. I don’t want Mark to do my fight scenes for me.”
Neeson has not yet set a specific date for his final role in an action film, but said it will likely be in 2025, adding: “Probably late next year.” I think that’s it. ”
Since his breakout action film role in 2008’s Taken, Neeson has starred in dozens of action films. He starred in two “Taken” sequels and has also appeared in action films such as “Unknown” (2011), “The Grey” (2012), “Nonstop” (2014) and “Run All Night.” We fought hard. (2015), “The Commuter” (2018), “The Ice Road” (2021), etc. Neeson’s latest action project, Absolution, will be released in November and reunites Neeson with Cold Pursuit director Hans Petter Moland.
“When he gets into that character, you get hurt and you feel the pain,” Moreland told PEOPLE about what makes Neeson such a timeless action hero. “He’s going to be that guy.”
Neeson aims to retire from action films in 2025, but for now he will continue to film action films. Earlier this year, he was chosen to star opposite Zachary Levi in Guy Moshe’s new action thriller film Hotel Tehran. This project was shot in late summer.
