The Australian women’s hockey team will play the People’s Republic of China on Monday in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Hockey Women’s Quarterfinals Australia vs. China will be live-streamed and broadcast in Australia. The AUS vs. CHN hockey match begins at 6pm AEST.

The Hockeyroos made it through Group B and advanced to the quarterfinals.

In order to leapfrog Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Argentina in the points table, the Hockeyroos needed a two-point win over Spain in their final group match, but goals from Steph Kershaw and Caitlin Nobbs in the final five minutes sealed the victory for the Hockeyroos. Ta.

The last-gasp victory allowed the world No. 4 Hockeyroos to avoid European powerhouses Belgium and Germany for a top-eight spot. However, the Hockeyroos cannot afford to take China, which ranks eighth in the world, lightly.

At Tokyo 2020, the Hockeyroos made it through the group stage but lost in the top eight to India, another Asian hockey team.

Australian head coach Katrina Powell, who was part of the Hockeyroos teams that won gold in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000, will have her hands full, especially in the dugout.

The Australia vs. China hockey match at Paris 2024 is set to reunite Powell with Alison Annan, a Hockeyroos teammate from Atlanta and Sydney who is currently the head coach of the Chinese women’s hockey team.

Interestingly, Rick Charlesworth, who coached the Hockey Roos to gold medals at the Atlanta and Sydney Games, is assisting Annan in setting up the Chinese team.

China has emerged as an emerging force in women’s hockey under the guidance of two Australian legends, and recently won gold at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, earning them a ticket to Paris.

The Chinese women’s hockey team placed fourth in Group A, advancing to the final eight and aiming for their second Olympic medal after winning silver at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Meanwhile, Australian women were Olympic champions in Seoul in 1988, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000, but have not been able to advance beyond the quarter-finals since then.

Australia vs China women’s hockey match results

Since 2013, Australia and China have crossed the border 27 times. The Hockeyroos have won 13 games and China has won seven. The remaining seven were tied.

The Hockeyroos came out on top in the Tokyo 2020 group stage with an overwhelming 6-0 lead, but this was the last time the two teams faced each other on the Olympic stage.

However, four of China’s seven wins have come in the last six meetings with the Hockeyroos. The last time the two sides met was at the Perth International Hockey Festival 2024 in April this year. China won by a huge margin of 3-2.
