Kevin Hart and John Cena will be sharing the screen again in The Leading Man, a Netflix action comedy based on the comic book series by Jeremy Haun and B. Clay Moore. The pair also works behind the scenes as producers.
Plot and production
The story plays the role of a self-absorbing film star who gets a check of reality that is unwelcome when Cena discovers the “man in the man’s chair” (heart) on her screen. With the real crisis unfolding, spoiled actors must find a way to trade staged heroics for real and save the world without stunt doubles.
The deadline broke the news and reported that the script adaptation came from John and Erich Hover. Hoebers is back on Netflix after selling the streamer a fast and loose version of the original script. One of them is an action comedy set in Star Will Smith, and is currently looking for a new director following Michael Bay’s departure.
This is not the first attempt to bring the main guy to the screen. Universal Pictures reportedly has Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 5) as director in 2011, but the project was never progressing.
Producers for the planned film include Luke Kelly Klin and Brian Smiley from Heartbeat, Joe Ross and Jeff Kirschenbaum for RK Films, Eric Gitter and Peter Schwelin from Ignition Productions, and Cena and Dan Beam.
Recent upcoming works by Heart and Cena
This is not the first time Hart and Cena have teamed up. They previously collaborated on Die Hart Season 2 – also released as Feature Die Hart 2: Die Harter, but Cena joined the Action-Comedy series as his own opposing new character in Hart’s fictionalized version.
Hart is scheduled to star in the upcoming Netflix comedy 72 Hours directed by Tim Story, with other streamer credits including Dad, Me Time, The Man from Toronto, Lift, and The Limited Series Story Story.
Cena’s recent credits include Amazon MGM’s Head of State. He then appears in Peacemaker Season 2, The Long Delayed Coyote vs. Acme and Matchbox, a live-action adventure based on a toy brand.
