It’s actually a little surprising that it took this long for a AAA game based on the movie series to be made. Lionsgate and Saber Interactive have released the official announcement trailer for the John Wick video game – and yes, he’s very much back. Watch the trailer above and read on to find out what you can expect from this brutal gun-fu-fueled leap into interactive action.
Keanu Reeves returns as Baba Yaga
Revealed at Sony’s State of Play showcase, the new single-player third-person action game is being developed in collaboration with Saber Interactive, Lionsgate, and franchise director Chad Stahelski. Keanu Reeves reprises the role, making sure this digital assassin looks and sounds like he should, not only with his voice but also with the character’s likeness.
The as-yet-untitled game features an original story set within the established John Wick timeline, expanding on the franchise’s complex lore with familiar faces from the movies and brand-new characters created specifically for the project. According to PlayStation’s official synopsis, the experience is designed to allow players to step directly into Baba Yaga’s own tailored suit and feel like they’re inside a John Wick movie.
In a press release accompanying the trailer’s release, Lionsgate President of Global Products and Experiences Jenifer Brown said, “We can’t wait for fans to step into the shoes of John Wick and explore the multidimensional world of The High Table. We’re working closely with Saber’s dedicated team to develop a game that captures the unparalleled action, brand-defining fight choreography, immersive world-building, and authenticity of the film.”
Gunfu combat and cinematic chaos
If the announcement trailer is anything to go by, the action won’t be flimsy for the controller. Naturally, the game is tailored towards a mature audience, combining Wick’s signature “Gung Fu” fighting style with intense driving sequences, stylized camerawork, and immersive environments crafted to reflect the series’ sophisticated neo-noir aesthetic.
Saber’s design promises a unique combat system built from the ground up to recreate the blend of hand-to-hand combat and firearms choreography that characterizes the film. Expect high-impact gunfights, close quarters takedowns, and vehicular mayhem aimed at blurring the lines between cinematic and gameplay.
“John Wick is one of the most iconic characters in action movie history,” said Matthew Kirch, CEO of Saber Interactive. “Saber is honored to work with Chad, Keanu and the Lionsgate team in a true collaboration to bring Wick’s world to life in a AAA game.”
Set before impossible task
Narratively, the game explores a chapter of Wick’s life set many years before the so-called “Impossible Task”, offering a fresh yet canon storyline within the broader narrative. This is positioned as a universe expansion rather than a retelling, deepening the mythology surrounding the High Table and the criminal underworld that fans already know.
This title is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC and can be added to your wishlist. The release date has not yet been confirmed.
John Wick universe so far
The John Wick series has become much more than just a revenge thriller. The series grossed more than $1 billion worldwide across four films, building a stylized neo-noir world of assassins, high-table politics, and carefully choreographed gunfire, and garnering both critical acclaim and a devoted fan base.
The world has since expanded with one of Peacock’s biggest originals of 2023, the TV series “The Continental” and the new spin-off film “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas. A new film centered around Donnie Yen’s Kane and another film set after John Wick: Chapter 4 are also in development. Well, Baba Yaga’s world isn’t over yet.
