The new film, titled Shutout, is set to bring together a fascinating pairing with Jenna Ortega and Robert De Niro attached to the star under the direction of David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter, Three Kings).
Announcing ahead of the 2024 Cannes film market, the Shutout marks the reunion of De Niro and Russell. Past collaborations include Silver Lining Playbook, American Hustle and Joy. Future features are described as “promoting” romantic drama set in the world of cutthroats of competitive pool hustings.
The film follows Jake Kejoune (De Niro), a veteran pool hustler from a bygone era. What starts as mentorship swirls into a tense journey through smoky backrooms and high stakes tournaments, both lose more than just a game.
The script comes from Alejandro Adams, and Russell produced alongside Joe Ross and Jeff Kirschenbaum of RK Films, which was born Mark Bombab.
“We are delighted to work with acclaimed director David O. Russell and legendary Robert De Niro, and we are particularly excited to see Jenna step into the spotlight alongside these two film icons,” RK Film’s Jeff Kirschenbaum said in a statement. “It’s a rare and thrilling opportunity to help these high-class teams come together and tell a compelling story. It’s very accurate and feels like a perfect break.”
Shutout is featured by Black Bear to international buyers at Cannes Market as CANES Media Finance handles US rights.
Ortega had success on Wednesday, and Scream and Beetle Juice’s Beetle Juice continues to carve out famous roles across film and television. Her upcoming projects include Wednesday’s season 2, the psychological thriller’s rushing tomorrow (starring Weekund and Barry Keogan), and the sci-fi film Klara and the Sun, directed by Taika Waitty.
Meanwhile, De Niro will add a shutout to the slate, including Flower Moon and the Netflix series Zero Day recently. His upcoming films include Tin Soldier, the action thriller starring Jamie Foxx and Scott Eastwood.
Although the production timeline and release details have not been announced yet, the project’s pedigree and cast are already located in one of the most talked about projects heading for Cannes.
