Apple TV+ Comedy Shrinking is adding Jeff Daniels to the cast for the upcoming third season. The two-time Emmy Award winners are set to appear in guest roles repeatedly, leading the series’ leads Jason Segel and Harrison Ford.
Daniels plays Jimmy Laird’s father. The ending of Season 2 suggests that Jimmy continues to rebuild his life and relationships, but the dynamics between the two are now being wrapped up for now. The previous season closed both Jimmy and Brett Goldstein character Sean, forgiven each role in the events in which he left his widow. Parental reappearance appears to be prepared to stir things up even more.
Daniels marked a notable addition to the ensemble, bringing decades of experience in both drama and comedy to the well-received series. He has focused most of the past decade on heavier materials, including newsrooms, godless and American rust, but hearing is likely to remember his turn in the stupid Dunbar movies, reminiscent of his comedic chops. The reduction will become his first major live-action comedy series role.
Created by Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein, Shrinking follows therapist Jimmy, who begins to convey his thoughts accurately to his clients. The unconventional approach overturns not only their lives, but his own lives, as well as his own. Along with Segel and Ford, the cast includes Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tenney, Michael Urry, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley.
Behind the scenes, Lawrence and Goldstein returned as executive producers, along with Seigel, Ashley Nicole Black, Neil Goldman, James Pon Salt and others. Shrinking is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Lawrence’s Doozer Productions.
Daniels’ upcoming projects include playing Ronald Reygan in the Cold War drama Reykjavik and starring in Dilettante, a New York media drama under development for Apple TV+.
The premiere date for Season 3’s reduced size has not been announced.
