Jason Momoa will appear in another Apple TV+ drama. The streamer is reportedly developing Nomad, a biker series set in New Zealand, co-created by Sons of Anarchy and Mayans MC creators Kurt Sutter and Chris Collins.
Apple TV+ has lined up Momoa to star in the project, which is set in the brutal world of outlaw motorcycle clubs in Aotearoa. The series follows a “warrior” who is caught between two lives, two missions, and two families, and must decide which version of himself he can actually live with. It sounds like classic Sutter territory, only moved to a completely different corner of the map.
Deadline reported that Sutter and Collins are writing the pilot, with Collins on board as showrunner. Collins is executive producer and screenwriter on Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy, and his list of writing credits includes John Wick: Chapter 3, The Wire, and The Man in the High Castle. Executive producers include Sutter of SutterInk, Collins of Generator Entertainment, Momoa and Brian Mendoza of the On the Roam banner.
Momoa continues to build on Apple TV+
Nomad continues Momoa’s ongoing engagement with Apple. He recently starred in the historical series “Chief of War,” set in Hawaii, and previously starred in the sci-fi drama “See,” which ran for three seasons. It fits well with the actor’s current rhythm, bouncing between large-scale film work and television projects that lean more into a particular world or culture.
The show’s focus on bikers also aligns with Momoa’s long-standing fascination with motorcycle culture. He directed and starred in the 2014 thriller Road to Paloma (pictured above), playing a Native American man who rides his motorcycle through the American West, and hosted and directed the documentary series On the Roam, where he traveled by motorcycle, meeting artisans and artists, and immersed himself in everything from motorcycle building to photography and music.
On the movie front, Momoa has been really busy. The actor just starred in A Minecraft Movie, which was a strong box office success for Warner Bros., and a sequel is already in the works. He is also one of the recurring characters in Fast
Kurt Sutter returns to outlaw territory far from home
For Sutter, Nomad is a return to the outlaw stories that defined Sons of Anarchy and Mayans MC, but from a very different context. New Zealand’s biker scene has its own long history, shaped by decades of alliances and rivalries between Maori and Pasifika riders and clubs such as Nomads, Black Power, Headhunters and Mongrel Mob. It’s the kind of environment that naturally aligns with Sutter’s recurring interests in loyalty, family, and slow-moving violence.
Sutter also has a Western series, The Abandons, starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, set to debut on Netflix in December. If it deals with the dusty frontier side of his storytelling, Nomad seems intent on bringing him back between helmets and patched jackets, this time to the other side of the world.
Apple has not yet publicly commented on Nomad, and there is no word on timing. Still, this project, which sees Momoa, Sutter and Collins exploring the New Zealand biker world, is one genre fans will want to keep an eye on.
