James Gunn says Batman is his “bigest problem” in the DC Universe now

James Gunn’s new DC universe is slowly taking shape, but one of the biggest pieces still understood is Batman. The director has not hidden the fact that it proves to be one of his toughest challenges.

A new Batman, separate from Robert Pattinson

Gunn has long confirmed that his upcoming DCU will include a brand new take on Batman, apart from Matt Reeves, an ongoing Batman film with Robert Pattinson. But exactly how this new Dark Knight fits into his wider DC world is what Gunn says he’s working so hard to get him right.

“Batman is now my biggest problem with everything about DC. Personally,” Gunn admits in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. “I’m not writing Batman, but I’m working with a Batman writer and trying to get it right because he’s very important to DC.

There was no confirmation as to who this author was exactly.

Gunn also frequently worked on fan speculation about whether Pattinson’s Batman could eventually be folded into the DCU. “It’s a consideration. We have to think about it. We have to think about it. It’s not that we’ve never discussed it,” Gunn said. But when pushed, he revealed: “I will never say zero because I never know. But that’s not the case. That’s not the case at all.”

For now, brave and daring people introduce DCU’s Batman

Instead, Gunn’s DC Universe introduces its own Batman in Brave and The Bold (as in the current title), with Andy Muschietti (The Flash) still attached directly. Based on Grant Morrison’s comic run, the story centers around Bruce Wayne and his son Damien. He becomes a new Robin.

However, for Gunn, making another Batman film due to the popularity of the characters is not the goal. “Does Batman need a reason for his existence? Batman can’t do that, ‘Yeah, he’s making Batman movies, so Batman is Warner Bros.'” explained Gunn. “But DCU needs him and there’s a need for him to be not exactly the same as Matt’s Batman.”

At the same time, Gunn stressed that while ensuring that this new Batman is different from Pattinson’s dark crime noir version, it does not mean a bright or comedy take. “I’m not really interested in funny, campy Batman,” he said. “By the way, I think there’s a way. I think I really know what it is. I’m just treating writers so that I can make it a reality.”

Batman Part II is still moving forward

“It’s not cancelled,” Gunn said, closing rumors that Matt Reeves’ Batman Part II is in trouble. “We don’t have a script. Matt is slow. Take his time. Let him do what he’s doing. God, people are mean. He should do his thing, man.”

For now, Gunn seems happy that Reeves continues to build another version of Gotham at his own pace. Gunn is fully piloting the first wave of the DCU project, as Superman hit the cinema in July and Season 2 of Peacemaker arrived at Max in August.

Meanwhile, work on creating the new DCU Batman continues in the background, with the hated crusades still positioned as an important cornerstone of cancer’s long-term planning.
