James Gunn hasn’t sugared what happened to Henry Cavill. Superman screenwriter and DC Studios boss have finally broken the nasty timeline where Cavil announced his return as Superman.
Gunn and producer partner Peter Saffron were still negotiating their role in DC when Cavill returned when Superman suddenly came out. As far as cancer is concerned, that didn’t make any sense.
Speaking about the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Gunn revealed how it all blinded him and how badly he felt about how it unfolded.
No trades were made, but Cavill has already returned
“We were trying to figure out if we could get a job at DC Studios,” Gunn said. “And suddenly, the day our deal closed, we announced that Henry was back.”
He said, “I know what’s going on? We know what the plan is. The plan was to do Superman. So it was really unfair to him and totally unfortunate.”
Of course, the plan was to reboot the characters. This led closely to Superman this year, with David Coren Sweat taking over the cape.
Cavill’s Return officially appeared in late 2022 when he made a credit cameo as Black Adam superman starring Dwayne Johnson. Shortly after the film’s hit film (October 2022), Cavill joined social media with in-person camera video messages for fans, saying, “I’m back in Superman.”
Breaking the news: “This poor man”
Gunn said it was clear that Cavill had been caught in a crossfire. “That was a real shame,” he said. “I’m like this poor guy.”
There, Gunn and Saffron insisted on sitting directly with Cavill.
“We spoke to him. He was an absolute gentleman and a great guy about it,” Gunn said. “He said, “The only thing I ask is that I can reveal it myself, not come from you.”
Cavil confirmed his exit in an Instagram post on December 22, 2022. “I just met James Gunn and Peter Saffron. “After all, I’m not coming back as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce that I’m going back to October, before their employment, this news is not the easiest, but it’s life.”
Studio confusion and power play
Gunn pointed to the vacuum of leadership at the time as a major factor. “[A lot of people]wanted to take on what they wanted to do in DC, but they were trying to force their path,” he said.
He added that Cavill’s return is not part of the actual plan of David Theslav, the Discovery boss of Warner Bros.
Can Cavill return? Gunn says he’s open
So, was Cavill complete in DC? That’s not necessarily the case.
Gunn was asked if it was too confusing that Cavill would play another role in this new development DC Universe. “It’s definitely not. I told him that day. I want to put Henry in something.”
Cavill’s Superman Run began with Man of Steel in 2013 and was wrapped in a small cameo from Black Adam. But Gunn’s comments make that clear. The Cavill chapter in the DC Universe may not be over. It just doesn’t have a cape.
