HBO has released a midseason trailer for IT: Welcome to Derry, showing exactly what Bill Skarsgård will look like back in Pennywise and teasing an even messier second half of the season. Episode 4 is out now, with four episodes remaining, and the clown finally emerges from the shadows. Watch the trailer above and read what happens next in Delhi.
Pennywise finally takes the spotlight
A new trailer reveals that the slow burn is over. Pennywise, who had been wandering around the edges of the story, makes a full-fledged appearance and thanks Lily for convincing him, “You’re such a good friend, come see us all” while hiding in the sewers. A young man with blood smeared on his face gruffly says, “I’ve always wondered how you taste,” while a young man recoils on the ground in fear.
We also get a glimpse of Pennywise looming over the likes of Dick Halloran and Ronnie, drawing more and more Derry residents into his orbit. It feels like the training wheels are off. In episodes 5-8, the clown stops hinting and starts hunting.
Delhi’s history gets darker and bigger
The trailer suggests that, along with the clown, the show delves deeper into the town’s rotten history and the creatures behind it. Lily continues to pull Bob Gray’s strings, Dick Halloran struggles with IT pushing further into his mind, and Shaw and Rose clash over whether this thing can actually be “controlled.” There’s a quick shot of Hank being attacked while riding the bus to Shawshank State Penitentiary, a flash of the ’60s Losers’ Club beginning to disintegrate, and an event very similar to the burning of the Black Spot, a key event in Stephen King lore that marks the end of one of the IT cycles.
The series has already expanded on Pennywise’s origins with stories about meteors, ancient horrors, and government interests, and this teaser suggests that the second half will double down on that larger, interconnected mythology while keeping the horror rooted in the streets of Derry.
Release details and the road to the finale
It: Welcome to Derry returns with episode 5 on HBO and HBO Max on November 23 (US), with new episodes released weekly. The eighth and final episode of season 1 is scheduled to air on Sunday, December 14th.
Season 2 hasn’t been officially ordered yet, but the creative team has a three-season plan in mind, so how this Pennywise-heavy back-half lands could be key to Derry’s next season.
