HBO Max has released a trailer for episode 3 of IT: Welcome to Derry. This is a tense next chapter in the series, set 27 years before the first IT movie. It teases connections to Stephen King’s world, a sharper focus on Dick Halloran, and the clearest hint yet that Pennywise is ready to step out of the shadows. Watch the trailer for episode 3 (titled “Now You See It”) above and read the info below.
Shawshank beckons
After his arrest, Hank Grogan (Stephen Ryder) is taunted in his cell. “Do you know what they’re doing about the Shawshank child killers?” Chief Clint Bowers (Peter Outerbridge) asks him.
This line name-checks Shawshank State Penitentiary, the setting for Dr. King’s novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, which was later made into a popular 1994 film. It also shows how dire Hank’s situation has become. Keen-eyed observers may have spotted the Shawshank prison bus in the series’ official trailer.
Lawsuits against children in Hank’s sights
With Hank, who died in episode one, ready to take on the Fall, Lily Bainbridge (Clara Stack) teams up with Ronnie Grogan (Amanda Christine) to clear her father’s name. Their plan targets facts, not rumors. They seek help from Will Hanlon (Blake Cameron James) and his scientific know-how. It is the right thing to do, but Derry has a way of twisting the truth and exposing the most vulnerable.
Halloran’s Vision and the Carnival Refrain
Meanwhile, The Shining’s Dick Halloran (Chris Chalk) becomes involved in the search for a weapon the military is looking for. He is being stalked by a creepy flash of a tout. It’s a mocking song that says, “Go up to the right,” and it gets more and more creepy as the video progresses. The trailer ends with a scene in which Hallorann appears to be facing the unmistakable glint in Pennywise’s eyes. It teases what could be our first proper look at the clown form audiences are familiar with.
