Discover Gaurav and Vishu’s unique multi-generational home design built for parents and children using over 9,000 terracotta tiles in Mount Waverley.
Grand Designs Australia continues tonight with a unique architectural challenge, as husband and wife team Gaurav and Vishu tackle a very personal project. The idea is to design a multi-generational home for families in Mount Waverley.
The couple, both accomplished architects, will be collaborating for the first time on this ambitious project that will allow elderly parents from India and their young children to live under one roof.

A modern interpretation of traditional courtyard design, the home includes a self-contained “granny flat” and hidden lap pool. The exterior is central to this home’s beauty. More than 9,000 locally sourced terracotta tiles wrap the roof and walls, giving the property a unique look. The choice of terracotta is not only visually striking, but also practical, as the material’s natural thermal properties help regulate temperature.
But despite their architectural expertise, the couple faces significant logistical challenges. To keep construction on schedule and within budget, we chose to use prefabricated panels for interior walls and ceilings.
Although these panels are time-efficient, they are manufactured overseas, making projects susceptible to international shipping delays. With deadlines fast approaching, the family wants to celebrate Diwali in their new home, but the pressure is mounting.
As Gaurav and Vishu navigate the intricacies of this complex building, viewers will no doubt wonder if their professional skills and personal determination will stand up to the demands of building a home that will house multiple generations. The questions will intrigue you. And of course, one question remains. How will their parents react to the impressive terracotta-clad house?
