The official trailer for In the Blink of an Eye, an emotional and ambitious time-span science fiction film from Wall-E director and Finding Nemo co-director Andrew Stanton, has been released. Watch the trailer above and read what we know so far, as well as some not-so-great early information from Sundance.

A trilogy that has been passed down for over a thousand years

The plot unfolds over three interconnected stories set at vastly different points in time. In the distant past, displaced Neanderthal families struggled to survive in a hostile environment, protecting their children and learning how to adapt using the most basic tools available. In the present, Claire, an anthropology-obsessed student played by Rashida Jones, forms a tentative bond with fellow academic Greg, played by Daveed Diggs, but her study of ancient hominin ruins begins to blur with her own search for connections.

Two centuries into the future, the story moves to deep space. Coakley, played by Kate McKinnon, and her sentient onboard computer face a mysterious disease that threatens the spaceship’s oxygen-producing plant, putting the entire mission and everyone on board at risk.

Big Ideas, Quiet Talk

There’s no shortage of ambition here. The images lean toward mood, scale, and introspection, structuring the film as a meditation on humanity’s desire to connect across time. That being said, it’s worth noting that there will be no theatrical release. After its premiere at Sundance, early reactions have not been exactly encouraging, with the film currently sitting at an 18% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This may help explain why this film bypasses movie theaters entirely.

In the Blink of an Eye stars Kate McKinnon, Rashida Jones, Daveed Diggs, Jorge Vargas, and Tanaya Beatty. The film was directed by Andrew Stanton and produced by Jared Ian Goldman from Colby Day’s 2016 The Blacklist screenplay.

release date

The film will be released exclusively on Disney+ on February 27th.
