NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced that Australia has been nominated as a ‘Country to Watch’ for the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held in Goa from November 20 to 28.

This special recognition aims to celebrate Australian film’s dynamic contribution to the global film industry, highlighting its rich storytelling tradition, vibrant film culture and innovative film technology. . According to the ministry, India and Australia are already parties to the Audiovisual Co-production Convention.

The “Country of Focus” segment is a key feature of IFFI, offering an exclusive look at the country’s best contemporary films. Australia’s diverse cultural background and internationally acclaimed filmmakers have had a lasting impact on film, making it a worthy addition to this year’s selection.

The addition reflects increased cooperation between the Indian and Australian film industries. IFFI presents a selection of seven Australian films, spanning a diverse mix of genres, from critically acclaimed dramas to powerful documentaries, visually stunning thrillers and light-hearted comedies.

These films showcase Australia’s unique cultural identity and reflect the vibrant stories of Indigenous and contemporary communities. Film Bazaar, South Asia’s largest film market, will be held alongside IFFI, with a strong delegation from Screen Australia, State Film Commissions and Ausfilm, the agency that promotes Australia as a filming destination. Along with this, there will be large-scale participation from Australia.

They will be showcasing their products, including Australian locations and incentives, in a special exhibition area at the Film Office. Film Bazaar will also include a producer delegation of up to six producers funded by the Australian Government to explore co-production opportunities.

Film Bazaar will also host a special Australian Co-Production Day, giving filmmaker representatives from both countries an opportunity to network. Film Bazaar also selected the Australian project “Home Before Night” as one of its official entries into the co-production market.

With growing cooperation between the Indian and Australian film industries, a dedicated panel discussion in the Knowledge Series will focus on co-production opportunities between the two countries. Panels featuring producers and industry experts will explore the creative and logistical aspects of co-production and highlight successful ventures.

The main attraction is a cinematography masterclass led by Academy Award-winning cinematographer John Seale, known for his work on iconic films such as Mad Max: Fury Road and The English Patient. . This session delves into his artistic journey and provides valuable technical insight for budding filmmakers and enthusiasts.

The 55th IFFI is set to be an exhilarating celebration of world cinema, bringing together an eclectic selection of films from around the world, with stimulating panel discussions, engaging workshops, and exclusive screenings. This year’s Country in the Spotlight spotlight will be on Australia and will no doubt further strengthen IFFI’s mission to foster cultural exchange and promote the art of film across borders.

Established in 1952, the International Film Festival of India is one of the most important film festivals in Asia and serves as a platform for filmmakers from around the world to present their work. Held every year in Goa, IFFI brings together directors, producers, actors and film enthusiasts to celebrate the world’s best cinema.
