A24 dropped the trailer because if I had the leg I kicked you. It’s a dark comedy drama that makes waves on the festival circuit. Rose Byrne stars as a mother wobbling at the edge of the collapse, and her performance has already won her best lead performance at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Adding a 93% rotten tomato score, this appears to be heading into the awards season with momentum.
Please read the trailer above and read more about it.
Roseburn fights breakdowns and bad therapy
Byrne plays Linda, a woman whose life is rapidly cavernous. My daughter’s illness has worsened and her husband is nowhere to be found.
Television host Conan O’Brien goes on a more dramatic route here, playing her therapist. She desperately wants an answer. “I’m asking you what I should do. Can you hear me?!” she cried to him. His response: “Good night, I want you to sleep.” With a snippet of her life, the trailer appears and it’s obviously easier than you could say to get a relaxed Shut Eye.
The cast also includes Daniel McDonald, Christian Slater, A$AP Rocky, Lark White, Ivy Walk, Daniel Zolgadori and Delaney Quinn.
The story behind the film and the personal connection between Byrne
“I’ve always loved the dark side of things,” Byrne spoke to the deadline at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. “When humor in these situations is so high, I’m these stories as a woman. I’m very related. As a mother, Mary’s script spoke to me (it’s) about the traumatic experiences of caretakers of any situation where you can’t reach your life and the little ones break it down.”
Writer-director Mary Bronstein (Yeast) is based on her own experience dealing with her daughter’s health crisis. “These species came from a very stressful experience when my daughter was seven years old,” Bronstein told Deadline. “The way I handled it at the time was that I started writing this film.
It took seven years to make the project come true. Bronstein revealed that she would be happy to wait. “I had to wait for Rose… I cast Conan O’Brien and $AP Rocky. I wanted Rose. I’m resting waiting for Rose to finish her season (Apple TV+ series Platonic).”
Awards season topic for Byrne’s acclaimed performance
With Baan’s Berlin victory and a strong critical response, kicking if he has a leg can be an unexpected player during the awards season. Byrne’s performance has already changed his mind. Time will tell if the Oscars will continue.
If I had my legs, I’m kicking you.
