Irish director Damian Mac Carthy follows up his 2020 feature debut Caveat with a fun yet terrifying riff on the old haunted doll vibe.

How to watch Oddity in Australia

Oddity is now streaming on AppleTV+ in Australia.

What is Oddity?

A year after his wife Dani is brutally murdered by a released mental patient, psychiatrist Ted Timmis and his new girlfriend Jana are visited by Dani’s twin sister, Darcy, a blind psychic. . Darcy is found guilty of more to his brother’s horrific death. More than meets the eye. She brought in a life-sized and definitely creepy wooden mannequin from the supply store. Is there more to Dani’s murder? surely. Will that disturbing thing someday come to our unnatural lives? Again, I’m sure.

Interestingly, the character of Orin Boole, a patient convicted of killing Dani, first appeared in Mac Carthy’s 2003 short film How Orin Lost His Eye, which is a kind of It is a sequel to. Go ahead and check it out.

Gwilym Lee, who played guitar legend Brian May in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” is played by Ted Timmis. Carolyn Bracken last appeared in the very fine The Quiet Girl, playing both Dani and Darcy. Tadhg Murphy is Orin Boole. Caroline Manton is Jana. Supported by Steve Wall and Jonathan French.

Why we’re excited about Oddity

Early reviews are very promising. Oddity easily won the Audience Award in the Midnight category at this year’s SXSW festival, and critics were pretty lavish in its praise, with the Rotten Tomatoes consensus saying: Understand the basics of fear and its screaming consequences. ”

Plus, we love the kitchen sink approach to horror. A murder mystery, a psychic, a ghost doll, and a psycho killer all rolled into one neat little package? Yes, I’m going to check this out.
