Following on from his Academy Award-winning short film Harvey Clampett and his feature debut Mary and Max, comes the latest dark, trendy whimsy from Melbourne claymation filmmaker Adam Elliott.
When will Memoir of a Snail be released in Australia?
Snail Memoirs will be in Australian cinemas on October 17, 2024.
What is Memoir of a Snail about?
Set in Australia in the 1970s, Memoir of a Snail is a big epic bildungsroman (get ready for your next Scrabble tournament, everyone). The story follows a young Grace Poudel from her childhood to adulthood after losing her mother. She is then separated from her alcoholic, depressed, paraplegic ex-juggler father (which is…a lot), and her twin brother, and they are sent to separate nursing homes on opposite sides of the country. It was done. She with a swinger couple and he with a religious donor couple.
Absolutely, that’s depressing! But anyone familiar with Eliot’s work knows that it is imbued with a deeply moving humanity and a dark, wry sense of humor. It definitely sounds like a comic book version of Precious on paper.
She also collects snails. That’s where the title comes in.
The cast of “Memory of a Snail”
Succession’s Sarah Snook will play Grace, and Charlotte Belsey will play young Grace. Former Nightcrawler Kodi Smit-McPhee is his twin brother, Gilbert Poudel, and Mason Rittsos is a younger version. Dominique Pinon (hey, Dominque Pinon from Delicatessen and City of Lost Children! I love that guy!) is their father, Percy Pudel. Paul Capsis plays the aforementioned swinger couple Ian and Narelle. Jacki Weaver, the cool aunt of Australian cinema, plays Pinky, a former table dancer and Grace’s elderly mentor/best friend. Eric “Poida” Bana is a magistrate. Also featuring are Magda Szubanski, Tony Armstrong and Nick Cave.

are you kidding? This is wonderful, quirky, funny, heartfelt, and all that good stuff. And it’s nice to be reminded that there’s more to Australia than brutally depressing crime dramas.
