Universal is going through everything about how to train a live-action dragon reboot. The studio has officially announced the sequel, “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” even before the first film jumps into the cinema.

The publication took place at Universal’s Cinema Con 2025 presentation in Las Vegas. There, the return director Dean DeBrois took to the stage alongside cast members Nico Parker and Gerard Butler, confirming that a live-action follow-up was set to be set for June 11th, 2027.

It’s a bold move from the studio, highlighting Universal’s clear confidence in the project. The entire first live-action film was screened for Cinema Con participants just before the sequel was announced. Based on DreamWorks Animation’s 2010 hit, The New Adaptation features Black Phone’s Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as Astrid. Gerard Butler returns to the franchise in the role of Stoic, the father of Hiccup’s Vikings.

The filmmaker behind the original three animated three anime, DeBlois, is back to the duties of scripting and direction for both live-action adaptations and its sequels, in a way that trains the functions of the dragon. Speaking at a press conference at the beginning of the year, DeBrois explained that the new iteration will allow creative teams to revisit previously constrained territory. “The rushed production schedule and the limited resources we had in the first DreamWorks film have made us skipped in the past.

“It finds moments that are very faithful to the story, yet enrich the relationships of the characters, give them a little depth and give them a bit of mythology that may have been lacking in the original.”

Inspired by Cressida Cowell’s book, the franchise has won over US$1.6 billion worldwide for three animated films, and has garnered multiple Oscar nominations along the way. It is Mark Pratt and Adam Siegel who will join Debrore as producers of live action splits.

With the sequel locked up and the first film already finished, Universal appears to be dealing with how to train the dragon as one of the studio’s next major live-action temporals. The fingers crossed it.
