The official trailer for Holy Days has arrived, offering a preview of the heartwarming drama starring Judy Davis, Miriam Margolyes and Jacki Weaver as three nuns on a road trip through New Zealand’s breathtaking South Island. Watch the trailer above, then read on for info.
An unlikely road trip takes shape
Holy Days, director Nat Bolt’s feature directorial debut, centers on Brian, a grieving 10-year-old boy played by newcomer Elijah Tamati, who takes refuge in a crumbling convent run by three eccentric nuns. When Brian hears of plans to close the convent, he takes a final step to save it and convinces the sisters to go in search of a former nun turned lawyer who might be able to help.
The trailer sets up a journey that’s part comedic misfortune and part emotional reckoning. As the group travels across snow-covered highways and remote mountain passes, it becomes clear that Brian has a very personal goal. That is to reach the top of Mt Cook. There, they believe they will be reunited with their deceased mother before she passes into the spirit world.
Faith, Family, and Finding Your Way
Based on the novel by Dame Joy Cowley, Holy Days was filmed entirely in New Zealand and was an international co-production with Canada.
Director Bolt, who also stars in the film, said in a statement when the project was announced: “I’m so proud of Holy Days and the amazing people and partnership that brought this incredibly entertaining film to life.” “Like Little Miss Sunshine, this story brings together an unlikely group of friends and sets out on an unexpected journey of discovery, where they may not get what they want, but they definitely get what they need.”
Holy Days will be released in New Zealand cinemas on February 26, but an Australian release date has not yet been confirmed.
