Helium Pictures, Goalpost TV is included in new round screen Australian industrial development funding

Screen Australia has announced 11 programs/projects and seven host companies, and will share $1.1 million in the Skills Development Fund and BTL: Next Step Initiative.

Introduced in 2023, to address the skill shortage of sub-line roles and enhance the capabilities of Australia’s screen workforce, the fund will support production companies, game development studios and screen businesses to provide job-based learning, BTL: Next Step will support medium-sized practitioners from current specialisations.

According to Screen Australia, the agency’s industry development initiative has provided over $6.4 million for training and skill development of more than 700 industry professionals over the past two years.

The application is open for the next Skills Development Fund Project/Initiative, starting on July 14th, and for the next Step Stage 2 (Place Chance). For more information, please contact industrydevelopment@screenaustralia.gov.au.

The programs/projects supported through the Skills Development Fund are as follows:

Alt Academy: Virtual Production – Alt.VFX Pty Ltd: Post-production studio Alt.VFX will use this fund to recruit three unrealistic engine artists, train them in the field of virtual production, helping to increase demand for skilled virtual production stage operators and artists within the industry. Anvilheart Staff Acceleration Plan – TowerPoint Pty Ltd: TowerPoint Games fast-forward development for the entire game team through mentoring, hands-on skills applications and workshops. Broadcast Crew Skills Training Fund – NEP Australia Pty Ltd: Broadcast media production company NEP uses this support to build freelance broadcasting industry crews to deliver content to clients, mature existing crews and benefit the entire external broadcasting industry, filling the gap in which skills shortages exist. Gak Academy: Momentum – Guck Pty Ltd: Momentum is an in-house training program that enables the growth of the personal professional practices of leading First Nations Games Practitioners at Game Studio Guck. The program focuses on taking people to the next level of career development through hands-on leadership experience and responsibility. Southern Pictures Skills & Diversity Accelerator Plan – Southern Pictures Pty Ltd: Production company Southern Pictures has designed a practical skill development plan to help sub-line practitioners acquire new skills and experience and achieve new screen credits beyond their current roles through valuable work-based learning and work experience in creating new documentaries. Sustainable Screens Australia Limited: Sustainable Screens Australia has developed Australia’s first sustainability supervisor training program. This initiative addresses the critical needs of the screen industry for skilled professionals who can implement environmental practices. This builds important capabilities to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and standardize sustainable production practices. Assembly Season 2 – Helium Pictures Pty Ltd: Helium Pictures aims to provide career training and development opportunities for people in underrepresented and marginalized groups of the industry. Location receives the following credits for Season 2 of Assembly: This is a production specializing in robbing the fate of movement and cooperation with autism. Programs and locations are supported by the bus stop film and Autism Spectrum Australia. Golden Bachelor Production & Post-Crumentership and Upskills Program – Warner Bros. International Television Production Australia Pty Ltd: The program aims to train crews in three important production areas with existing shortages and skill-skill co-producers, production managers and production coordinators. Production Line – Allstory Pictures Pty Ltd: This program empowers production managers and increases skill practitioners to production managers, focusing on First Nations filmmakers through culturally sensitive and structured training, mentorship and production experiences. Top End Bub – Post Production – Goalpost TV Pty Ltd: Production company Goalpost TV will use this support to develop two First Nations practitioners in Top End Bub post production and follow up on Australian film Top End Wedding. Running Skills – D2V Entertainment Pty Ltd T/A Watchpost: Post-production company WatchPost will create a skill development program for crews and staff to be implemented along with post-production for the working film The Run.

Media Stockade Two Pty Ltd – Production Manager Placement (SA): Ashleigh Knott (The Reclaimed, The Recordist, The Tourist) of SA. Werner Film Projects Pty Ltd – Production Manager Placement (VIC): Nicole Peters (Fake, Fisk Season 3, The NewsReader Season 3) Wildbear Entertainment – Editor Placement (ACT): WA of Nicole Norelli (100% Wolf: The Book of Hath, Todd Sampson’s Mirror Mirror). Drama Queen – Production Manager Placement (QLD): Individual placement to be announced soon. Helium Pictures Pty Ltd – Production Manager or Line Producer Placement (NSW): Individual Placement to be announced soon. Australian Production House Pty Ltd – Production Accountant Placement (QLD): The application is open. The deadline is April 3rd. Poster Boy Production Pty Ltd – Production Manager Placement (VIC) and Post Production Supervisor Placement (NSW): Open the application and apply here. Deadline 3 April 2025.
