Google has peeled back the curtain and revealed what we’ll be searching for in 2024. Don’t worry. Completely safe for work.

Kamila Ibrahim, search trends communications manager at Google Australia, says this year’s search trends perfectly capture how dynamic Australians are. We stay informed, we’re obsessed with sports, we’re passionate about both home-grown and global entertainment, we’re ‘obsessed with Tay’, we keep up with the latest trends, we love to travel, we’re crafty. Show off your smart side. Prove that there’s never a dull moment!

We may love to make fun of our American friends, but we clearly can’t help but get into their business. Case in point, the recent US elections stole the crown for the top searches in 2024, and it’s no wonder such a dramatic result grabbed so much attention.

The rest of the list features sports that we Australians are equally passionate about. From the Olympics to the Paralympics, our love for sporting excellence has come through.

Who topped the list of Australia’s most searched people in 2024?

According to Google Australia, this year has seen a strong rise in female representation in sport, with names such as Sam Kerr, Jess Fox, Sakaki Balasaya, Alisa Trueu and Arialne Titmuss appearing on the trending list. So let’s hear from some of the amazing women who are inspiring us through 2024!

Australian entrepreneur John Singleton has expressed heartbreak following the tragic loss of his daughter Dawn Singleton, who was one of the seven victims of the Bondi Westfield stabbing earlier this year. He became the most searched Australian in 2024.

Meanwhile, it’s no surprise that Julian Assange is on the list. His high-profile case dominated headlines, and Assange pleaded guilty to a single charge of violating the Espionage Act before being extradited to Australia.
