The Game Wards 2024 nominees have been revealed and are largely as expected, with Astro Bot and Final Fantasy 7 leading the way with seven nominations each.
This is the most controversial Game of the Year category (as it is every year), with titles like Astro Bot, Black Myth, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Metaphor ReFantazio, Balatro, and Elden. Expected games such as “Ring Shadow” are there. Even though it’s an expanded version of a game that was already nominated (and won) in 2022, it also features stuff from Erdtree.
Naturally, this started a debate about whether an expansion or DLC should be eligible to win GOTY. GOTY is something that people are very passionate about in some way, and it’s never happened before.
It’s worth mentioning that Press Start voted for this year’s awards (as we do every year) as one of the only Australian media invited to nominate. The Game Awards are scheduled to take place on Friday, December 13th at 11:30am.
