The first trailer for Freaky Tales has been removed. It’s as confusing as you would expect from a film that throws PedroPascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis and Normani into a bloody version of Auckland’s neon lighting in 1987. Directed by Captain Marvel Duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the film sews together four interconnected stories packed with crime, music, punk and a fair amount of flying fist. Look up.
The trailer doesn’t have time to set the duration and tone. There is 1987. Pascal’s character Clint begins with a voiceover. I can say for certain, this weak man has seen his last day. “From there, things spiral into the blur of shootings, brawls and neon-covered mayhem. Ellis plays the real NBA player Sleepy Floyd while Normani’s musician character gets caught up in her own high-stakes drama.
In addition to them, late Angus Cloud appears in one of his final roles, with the cast including Dominikshorn, Jack Champion, Jiyoung You and Hip Hopster also appearing in $HORT.
If the trailer is any indication, a freaky tale doesn’t just immerse your toes in different genres. The action and comedy are about to win center stage, but the trailer suggests a terrifying effect and lurks below. The film also plays in aspect ratios and visual formats, including the aesthetics of the distorted VHS era.
Known for balancing indie dramas (Half Nelson, Mississippi Grind) and larger budget spectacles (Captain Marvel, episodes of episodes), Boden and Fleck seem to be loose here, making a fuzzy story. It has been transformed into a high-energy love letter, up to pulp storytelling from the 80s. Early reviews were mixed from the January film’s Sundance premiere, with some criticising it as a messy pastiche lacking cohesiveness, while others praised it as a wild and entertaining ride It’s there. I understand.
Freaky Tales is scheduled to be released in US cinemas on April 4th.
