Whether you’re looking for a creepy cult to mingle on a windswept island, a wild Stephen King adaptation, or a heart-breaking mutated Scandi-noir, we’ve got it all.
male
British cinema has a history of pagan-fueled folk horror sparked by the sinister trilogy of 1968’s The Witchfinder General, 1971’s Blood on the Devil’s Claws, and 1971’s The Wicker Man. It has a time-honored tradition. Trees, 28 Days Later Screenwriter-turned-director Alex Garland gives Men a deeply disturbing modern twist. Jesse Buckley’s grieving widow Harper rents a beautiful country house from Rory Kinnear’s casually sexist home in search of solace. But what she actually finds is a creepy man stalking her in the woods and a village full of creepy characters who may be hiding an ancient and horrifying secret…

fire bite
Since his gloriously brutal debut film made waves at the Cannes Film Festival, it has focused on the colonial atrocities inflicted on these lands and the indigenous peoples who have cared for them for thousands of years. It has lit a burning torch to illuminate the lasting effects of colonial atrocities inflicted on people. He and Firebite co-creator Brendan Fletcher have fictionalized the horror, arguing that the British military deliberately brought vampires to these shores to aid their genocidal ambitions. Fast forward to this point, and the hunter Tyson, played by Rob Collins, takes on them in the pock-marked landscape of Coober Pedy.

lawn mower man
Author Stephen King’s name is synonymous with all kinds of horror, from creepy monsters roaming small towns to dystopian battles at the end of the world. Often he portrays human folly as as dangerous as the demons lurking in the shadows. That’s the premise of this film adaptation of Dr. King’s short story, but it’s so sketchy that King filed a lawsuit to have his name removed from the project. Still, director and co-writer Brett Leonard has created a story about a virtual reality-obsessed scientist played by Pierce Brosnan who experiments on a mentally retarded gardener played by Jeff Fahey, which inevitably leads to tragedy. It makes for an interesting cautionary tale about the misuse of technology.

lamb
Swedish actor Noomi Rapace journeys to a frightening sci-fi conclusion in Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel Prometheus, then returns to Earth for this absurd and disturbing Icelandic folk horror from director Valdimar Johansson. I’m back. Taking Scandi-noir to the next level, the film casts Rapace and White White Day star Hilmir Snar Gudnason as a farmer from a remote community grieving the death of his daughter. But when a strange lamb-human hybrid comes into their care, is it delirium or something darker?

dead land
Many Indigenous-led historical novels focus on the tragedies of the colonial era, but sometimes wars between rival tribes can be hellish. That’s certainly the case with playwright-turned-director Tor Fraser’s heart-pounding thrill ride, Dead Lands. James Rollston, played by Casting Boy, plays Hongi, a young Maori warrior. He is framed by the corrupt leader of a rival tribe, Waiyapa (Te Kohe Tuhaka, Love and Monsters), as a pretext for a violent battle that leaves his father Tyne (George Henare) dead. Determined to seek revenge, Hongi heads to a deep, forbidden land where the mythical monster Taniwha is rumored to hunt down anyone who trespasses for his cause. It was so great that a TV show of the same name was born.
The Dead Lands is now streaming on SBS On Demand.
good night mama
Twins are rarely good news in horror movies, as anyone who’s ever fallen in love with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining can attest. (This is one piece of work.) Austrian twins Lukas and Elias Schwarz join this unnerving tradition as young men who suspect a woman claiming to be their mother, who returns from plastic surgery with a bandaged face, to be an aggressive impostor. . But who exactly is this monster here? The director duo of Veronica Franz and Severin Fiala do not disappoint with this nail-biting film that is far superior to the remake starring Naomi Watts.
“Goodnight Mommy” is currently available on SBS On Demand.
blood quantum
Mi’kmaq filmmaker Jeff Barnaby tragically passed away from cancer in 2022, but his deeply harrowing second feature film Blood Quantum left behind a remarkable legacy. Debuting on the cult classic factory line at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness stream, it provides some much-needed originality to the zombie movie/show craze. Indigenous people living on the Red Crow Reservation are some of the only survivors of the global pandemic. It’s ironic that white Canadians flock to aid in hiding as they are once again forced to fight for their land by hordes of ravenous Brain Eaters.
“Blood Quantum” is currently available on SBS On Demand.
red king
Just as The Wicker Man set the fictional Hebridean outcrop of Summer Isle as the perfect remote setting with little hope of escaping the esoteric ways of the villagers, so the Welsh crime drama set the fictional Hebridean outcrop of Summer Isle as the perfect remote setting with little hope of escaping the esoteric ways of the villagers.・There is “King”. After facing discrimination, Grace Narayan, a Newcastle-based police officer played by Anjuli Mohindra, is unceremoniously dumped on the Welsh island of St. Joly (also fictional), where she searches for a missing child. be entrusted with. Could the pagan extravaganza that the locals proudly enjoy be more like a creepy cult than a harmlessly bizarre tradition? What do you think?
