Netflix dropped the official teaser trailer for the Murder Club on Thursday, leading the charges as unlikely detectives, including Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan and Celia Imley. Please see the teaser above for more information.
An adaptation of Richard Osman’s bestselling 2020 novel, the film is set in a gorgeous English retirement village, followed by four residents who meet weekly to meet. Things change when a real murder lands at their doorstep. What starts as a hobby will turn into a full-scale investigation.
Mirren stars as Elizabeth, a sharp ex-spy. Kingsley plays the retired psychiatrist Ibrahim. Brosnan is Ron, a former Union fire truck. And Imley concludes the team as Joyce. Joyce has more creepy than she allows. “There’s a great mystery to the heart of it,” director Chris Columbus (home alone, suspicious Mrs. Harry Potter, the Philosopher’s Stone) told Netflix’s site Tudum. “But it is interesting to see four elderly people who live in a retirement community and are fascinated by death and murder. They face their own end mise, but at the same time are obsessed with studying cold cases.”
The teaser doesn’t do much — just a glimpse of a close group that digs secrets, avoids dangers, and generally causes trouble. “It’s comedy, but it’s also very emotional,” adds Columbus. “They’re so happy. You want to be with them – and the murders are so much fun to solve.”
And with casts that include Celia Imrie, Naomi Ackie, David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Richard E. Grant, and more, the star power here is undeniable. Columbus himself says, “This is the best cast I’ve worked with since Potter.”
And don’t be surprised if this is not the last case Thursday’s murder club will take on. Ottoman’s bestseller is the first in a popular series that includes the Man Who Died twice, the Bullet Missed, and the Last Devil Who Dies. The fifth entry, impossible property, is scheduled for later this year. So, when this first film clicks, more murders and Mayhem are ready for adaptation.
Thursday’s Murder Club will arrive on Netflix on August 28th.
