The first trailer for The Adventures of Cliff Booth was released during the Super Bowl, with Brad Pitt reprising his role as Quentin Tarantino’s laid-back bruiser in the sequel, helmed by none other than David Fincher. Watch the trailer above and read what we know so far about the Netflix release.
Cliff Booth comes out of the shadows.
The trailer opens after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with Cliff Booth icing his injuries and casually acknowledging his role in thwarting the home invasion that concluded the original film. “So you helped Rick subdue the hippie intruders, right?” asks a new character played by Elizabeth Debicki. “Something like that,” Cliff replied. She continues to dig further: “You say it like there’s more to it than that.” Cliff dodges the bait with a dry grin. “I’m not very talented, but I know better than to let things get in the way of a good story.”
From there, the focus shifts to new chapters. Cliff is no longer just Rick Dalton’s stuntman, but a fixer on the fringes of 1970s Hollywood. This teaser offers glimpses rather than answers: movie sets, backrooms, projection booths, and the steady sense of danger that follows our charming protagonist wherever he goes.
There’s also a shot of Booth presenting the Academy Award, which I think is pretty fitting considering Pitt won his first Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
One of the trailer’s most notable choices is the censorship-aware gag. Cigarettes, nudity, guns, swearing, and even rude gestures are visibly drowned out on screen, making broadcast standards part of the joke. The film serves as both a nod to old television regulations and a window into Tarantino’s character waiting beneath the surface.
David Fincher takes the wheel with a cast
While Quentin Tarantino wrote the screenplay and is on board as a producer, The Adventures of Cliff Booth will see some notable changes behind the camera, with David Fincher directing. For fans of both filmmakers, this is a hell of a pairing, and we really can’t wait to see what the director of Se7en, Fight Club, and The Social Network does with the QT script.
In addition to Pitt and Debicki, the cast includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carla Gugino, Scott Caan, Holt McCallany, Corey Fogelmanis, J.B. Tadena, Karen Karagulian, Barry Livingston, Lauren Glazier, Peter Weller, and Timothy Olyphant, the latter of whom will reprise his role as James Stacy. Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie aren’t set to return as Rick Dalton and Sharon Tate, but their connection to the film and its universe leaves the door at least slightly blurred.
The release date has not been announced yet. The trailer ends with a simple promise: “Coming soon.”
