First “Chief of War” trailer: Jason Momoa fights Hawaii in the epic Apple TV+ series

Apple TV+ has dropped the official teaser trailer for the war chief. And if Jason Momoa has ever wanted to be a Full Brave Heart in the Hawaiian Islands, this could be your moment. Check out the trailer above and see more details below.

Created by Momoa and longtime collaborator Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, the war chief is a drastic historical drama set in the late 1700s, documenting Hawaii’s unification just before the grip of Western colonization took hold. Momoa plays Kaaiana, a high-ranked warrior who finds himself in the heart of a growing storm. He is a man torn between peace and bloodshed, but the trailer makes it clear where he is forced to stand.

“Are you still the chief who wants peace… over war?” asks Kaahmanu (Knight Agent Lucian Buchanan). His answer: “Not today.”

“This is my Braveheart.”

If this initial look is anything, the war chief has not pulled the punch. The brutal battles and sweep teaser sweeps showcase brutal battles and sweep makeup of Temuera Morrison, Cliff Curtis, Te O O Hanepehinga, newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikarea, Brandon Finn, James Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Main Yudo, Prince Prince, Prince Prince, Ti Kainima, Ti Kainima, Prince Prince, Prince King, and more. Benjamin Hogges.

For Momoa, this is personal. “This was everything I did,” he told GQ earlier this year. “This is my Braveheart. This is my last Mohawk. (…) It seems like it’s been 25 years since I can stop doing something like this.” He said, “I had to wait until my career was the right moment. And then we’ll save the movie in Minecraft and come back, kill it, kill it, mate!

That passion is evident in the show’s commitment to telling stories through the lens of Indigenous peoples, and in the native Hawaiian language. It also marks the big reunion of Momoa and Apple TV+ after the success of his post-apocalyptic series (I recommend checking it out if it can pass you).

Behind the scenes team

Spanning nine episodes, the Chief of War blends political plot, brutal conflict and personal cultural storytelling.

Justin Chung (Blue Bayou) directs the opening chapter, with Momoa stepping behind the camera for the finale, marking her second script directorial credit to Paloma to the 2014 Indie Film Road. He also directed multiple episodes of the Travel Docusary on Roam. The series is helmed by showrunner Doug John (Star Trek Beyond, Banshee, Mindhunter) and features a stacked executive team of Momoa, Thomas Paa Civette, Peter Chernin, Geno Topping, Tracy Cook and Brian Mendoza.

release date

Apple calls it “talking epic and unprecedented things about Hawaii’s unification and colonization.”

The first two episodes will be premiering worldwide on Apple TV+ on August 1, 2025. New episodes will be unfolding every week until September 19th.
