Eva Green steps into Wednesday’s world. Netflix has announced that the French star will be joining the cast for season 3 as Ophelia Frump, Morticia Addams’ long-lost sister. It’s a notable casting that brings a new threat to the Addams family tree and reunites Green with longtime collaborator Tim Burton. The two previously co-starred in Dark Shadows, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Dumbo.
Aunt Ophelia finally shows her face.
Ophelia has remained in the shadow of Wednesday’s legend for two seasons, fostering theories, visions, and one bloody warning. The character appears only from behind in the season 2 finale, wearing a flower in her hair and writing “Wednesday Must Die” on the wall. Season 3 pulls her out of the dungeon, with Green taking on the role and entering directly into the story.
Deadline broke the news, confirming that Green will become a series regular, marking the first major new casting announcement for next season. It also ended months of speculation, including fan speculation that Lady Gaga’s Rosalyn Rotwood was secretly Ophelia.
Creators Al Goff and Miles Miller told Tudum: “Eva Green has always brought a refreshingly singular presence to the screen: elegant, haunting, and beautifully unpredictable. Those qualities make her a perfect fit for Aunt Ophelia. We can’t wait to see how she transforms the role and expands Wednesday’s world.”
Green joins the Addams family
Describing Nevermore’s transition into orbit with clear enthusiasm, Green told Tudum, “I’m thrilled to be joining the deeply twisted world of Wednesday as Aunt Ophelia. This show is such a deliciously dark and witty world that I can’t wait to bring my own cuckoo-ness to the Addams Family.”
Season 2 positioned Ophelia as a powerful raven whose powers have gotten out of control. Morticia revealed that her sister had been locked up in Willow Hill Asylum by her mother, Hester Frump, before she escaped. Her reappearance through Wednesday’s visions – blonde hair, red dress, locked in a hidden cell – set up season three’s big mystery.
Miller teased the emotional aftermath by saying, “Ophelia has been gone for a long time, leaving a hole in Morticia’s life and many unanswered questions. Ophelia’s return will hit this family like a bombshell.” Goff added, “The plan was always that at the end of the season, viewers would get a glimpse of her in a way they weren’t expecting, and that’s what will be the impetus for Season 3.”
Big swing to record-setting series
Season 2 quickly became the fourth most-watched English series on Netflix, with season 1 still holding the top spot. Jenna Ortega returns as Wednesday Addams, along with Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair), Hunter Doohan (Tyler Galpin), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Moussa Mostafa (Eugene Ottinger), Georgie Farmer (Ajax Petropolis), Isaac Ordonez (Pugsley Adams), Billie Piper (Isadora Capri) and Luyanda Unati. Luis Nyawo (Sheriff Richie Santiago), Victor Dorobantu (Sing), Evie Templeton (Agnes DeMille), Luis Guzman (Gomez Addams), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia Addams), Joanna Lumley (Grandma Hester Frump), Fred Armisen (Uncle Festa).
Based on the character created by Charles Addams, Wednesday will be created and written by Alfred Goff and Miles Miller, who will serve as executive producers and showrunners. Tim Burton returns as director and executive producer. The studio is MGM Television.
Green’s casting marks her return to genre television following her Golden Globe-nominated and critically acclaimed performance in Penny Dreadful. She will be appearing in the horror drama “The Trees,” Cary Joji Fukunaga’s crime thriller “Blood on Snow,” and the thriller “Just Play Dead.”
The release date for Season 3 on Wednesday has not yet been announced.
